The Bible uses many metaphors about what is involved in being a follower of Christ.

1. A Christian This was not used in the earliest New Testament times, but was first used in the church at Antioch, (Antakya in modern Turkey). It refers to a follower of Christ. Originally it had no connection with any particular race. Modern use, as for all inhabitants of "the Christian west" causes great confusion. Acts 11:26

2. A Believer Belief that Jesus is God, that he died for us and that he rose from the dead is a vital part of following Christ. Christians express this in the Creeds. Acts 16:15

3. A Disciple This was one of the earliest terms for Jesus' followers, even when he was still on earth. It means "a learner." Christians are called to go on learning from Christ. Luke 14:27.

4. A follower of The Way This was a common description in the early church (Acts 9:22). It is a reminder that Jesus said: "I am the way, the truth and the life" (John 14:6). It is also a reminder that the Christian life is a journey with a destination.

5. Being "Born Again." Unfortunately its use by certain groups, especially in America, has brought this term into disrepute. However, Jesus himself used it. A successful young man complimented Jesus, but to Jesus that was not enough. He said to the young man: "You must be born again." (John 3:3). It has the idea of a new start, a new family, new priorities. It does not suggest physical rebirth (impossible!) but a spiritual rebirth.

6. Being "Saved" Salvation has the connotation of health and wholeness, as well as rescue from the consequences of evil. When a corrupt official welcomed Jesus, he then gave away half his wealth to the poor and returned anything he had cheated from others, Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house." (Luke 19:9) Jesus offers this to all today.

Together we see a Christian as someone who recognises Jesus as God who came to earth and died for us. In doing so he opened the way to God - "Eternal life." In return he expects us to follow, in the way he commands.
