The Apostles' Creed,
originated
in about 200AD and was finalised in around 600AD
This was originally used by new
believers, at their baptism, as a statement of their
faith.
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of he aven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord
He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit
and born of the Virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again.
He ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.
Nicene
Creed from
before 400AD, based on council of Nicea 325 ADA statement of faith by
the whole church, often used in worship
We believe in one God,
the Father, the almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, lesus Christ,
the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father
Through himall things were made.
For us men and for our salvation he came down from
heaven;
by the powerof the Holy Spirit
he became incarnate of the Virgin Mary,
and was made man.
For our sake he was crucified under
Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death an d was buried.
On the third day he rose again
in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory
to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son.
With the Father and the Son he is worshipped
and glorified.
He has spoken through the Prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic
and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the
forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.
Athanasian
Creed (a short form)
Derived as a statement of the
relationship between God the Father, Jesus and the Holy
Spirit
And the Catholic (i.e. universal) faith
is this:
That we worship one God in Trinity and Trinity in Unity;
neither confounding the persons, nor dividing the
substance.
For there is one person of the Father, another of the
Son, and another of the Holy Spirit.
But the Godhead of the Father, of the Son, and of the
Holy Spirit is all one, the glory equal, the majesty
co-eternal.
Such as the Father is, such is the Son and such is the
Holy Spirit.
Two Early Short Creeds
found in the Bible (therefore before 100AD)
1
Timothy 3:16
'He appeared in human form,
was shown to be right by the Spirit
and was seen by angels.
He was preached among the nations
was believed in throughout the world,
and was taken up to heaven.'
Philippians 2:6-11.
Who, being in very nature God,
did not consider equality with God something to be
grasped,
but made himself nothing,
taking the very nature of a servant,
being made in human likeness.
And being found in appearance as a man,
he humbled himself and became obedient to death
- even death on a cross!
Therefore God exalted him to the highest place
and gave him the name that is above every name,
that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.
