Christian faith is centred on Jesus, a historical figure who was born in Israel at about year 0 (Years later, when the Roman Emperor became a Christian the calendar was redated to start with his birth, as best he could calculate it) During Jesus's ministry, which lasted for three years, until he was about thirty, he predicted that he would die. He said that his death would purify any who believed in him, in a way that would forgive their sins, and mean that those believers might approach God both during their life and after death. Jesus also claimed to be the Son of God. He claimed that those who had seen him had seen God the Father. To those around, these phrases meant that he was claiming to be part of God. As a result, he was condemned as a heretic to death, just as he had predicted. This extraordinary claim would have remained just that, had he not returned from the dead, again. just as he had predicted he would, and then been seen alive by a large group of people, many of whom were initially sceptical. He then announced that the Holy Spirit would come to aid his disciples, as he was leaving them. However, he promised to return at the end of history. The fearful mystified disciples returned home. However, ten days later, on the day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit did come to the disciples, with remarkable effects - fire appeared to fall on their heads and their preaching was understood by those who did not speak their language. Jesus' followers were transformed from a small fearful group and went throughout the known world, telling how Jesus had transformed their lives through his Holy Spirit and made them able to know God and call him "Father.". As the "church" (a collection of Christians)
gradually considered all that Jesus had been, said and
done, they gradually formulated the "Creeds"
("I believe" in Latin) to express Christ's
work. |
